- got|ten
- got|ten «GOT uhn», verb, adjective.–v.a past participle of get: »
It has gotten to be quite late.
–adj.Usage In Great Britain, gotten has been largely replaced by got, but in America gotten remains generally current. In American usage, got rather than gotten is used with have to show obligation or to mean “own, possess”: »We have got (not gotten) to go tomorrow. We have got (not gotten) lots of time.
(In both examples have would usually replace have got in writing, though not in speech.) Otherwise, got and gotten are used freely, the choice depending mainly on rhythm or emphasis: »He could have gotten (or got) here by now. In the past I have gotten (or got) a good meal here.
